Hao Socheat has not identified Boeung Ket first-option goalkeeper yet

Boeung Ket will begin their 2019 Metfone Cambodian League (MCL) campaign this weekend as they are hopeful to secure their fourth league title in the club’s history following a disappointment from last season, when they failed to clinch the third league title in a row.

The Blue Dragons have brought in several new local and foreign players with their aim to add more trophies to their cabinet as league championships will, no doubt, be their main target.

Following the departure of Cambodia international goalkeeper Sou Yati in the midst of last season, Kim Makara has become Boeung Ket’s first-choice goalkeeper; however, the 33-year-old has sustained a knee injury that could keep him out of action for months.

Coach Hao Socheat’s side have signed two good goalkeepers including former Phnom Penh Crown goalkeeper Alex You and Hul Kim Huy, who left the National Football Academy.

Alex You, who was introduced to the Metfone Cambodian League by Phnom Penh Crown last season, left the six-time league champions after spending one season with the Phnom Penh-based club.

The 25-year-old is believed to be Boeung Ket’s first choice goalkeeper with his top-flight experience, confidence, and maturity as he has also featured in the three-time league champions’ several pre-season friendly matches.

Coach Hao Socheat, however, has not made up his mind whether it is Alex You or Hul Kim Huy, who will become Boeung Ket’s regular goal stopper after Hul Kim Huy produced a stunning performance for Cambodia U22 in the recent AFF U22 Championships.

Coach Hao Socheat told the-morning.com: “We have signed two new goalkeepers including Hul Kim Huy and Alex You, but we have not picked who our first-option goalkeeper is yet. We need to assess their performance as Hul Kim Huy has not been training with the club recently. He was with Cambodia U22 and also in the training camp with the senior team, too.

“Our goalkeeper coach and I are analyzing their performance and then decide who will be our first-option goalkeeper.

“And Kim Makara’s knee injury is getting better. Now he is working on small exercise in order to gradually recover from his knee issue.”

Boeung Ket travel to the RSN Stadium for their opening league clash with their biggest rivals Phnom Penh Crown, meaning that Alex You will face his former club should he be selected to play.
